Float Mania

Float Mania by Corliss Buenavida

Is it just my wishful thinking or has there been an abundance of float representation in the media this summer?

I’ll get this one out of the way first because it isn’t a pool float but you don’t get much bigger than the NFL season launch using a float and mentioning ‘ride the float’!

Of course things have been trending up in the pool floatation world ever since Taylor Swift released her ‘You Need to Calm Down’ video in 2019.

Pluto TV had a Summer of Cinema Explosion ad where a calm pool float gets blown out of the water.

For those of us in Canada, Crave TV closed out many of their promotions with a series of letter shaped floats over a swimming background spelling out the Crave name.

There was a paper towel ad emphasising how absorbent Sponge Towels are by soaking up an entire swimming pool load of water leaving a floater stranded at the bottom of the pool.

Floats were part of a summer promo from Olive Garden restaurants too. Available for purchase were pasta look-a-like items Relaxin’ Rigatoni, Takin’ It Easy Tortellini and Floatin’ Fettuccine.

A Twizzlers red licorice sticks commercial featured a girl eating them in the middle of a pool atop her pink flamingo.

It wasn’t just advertising and promotions which were highlighting floating devices. The following image is captured from a Toronto all news TV station which did a report about floaters taking in a calm ‘sound bath’.

The adage ‘any publicity is good publicity’ may not be what float manufacturers think when - every year - one of these types of stories hits the news.

One of the big pushes for floating was in internet media often using the term ‘viral’ and emphasizing how ‘Instagrammable’ they are. For example, fashion and wellness blog Elizabeth St., just one of many such sites, talked up custom pool floats being used in social and influencer campaigns because of their wonderful branding opportunities.

Actually, these postings are not too far off the mark. If you check any business analysis of the pool float market you will see strong growth year by year.

Forbes, known in the business world particularly for its lists and rankings, also operates Forbes Vetted, a section which provides expert product recommendations based on rigorous reporting and extensive research. They didn’t miss the opportunity to get in on the chatter with this July publication.

A new sector in the pool float market is motorized craft. Not my cup of tea but maybe it will keep float rescues from getting in the news.

Another area where floats have piqued some interest is with members of the NRA.

Perhaps the biggest pool float market sector expansion was in the large multi-person floats such as float spas and cabana bars. Quite pricey for an individual but cheaper than building a dock or buying a pontoon boat.

If you are not part of the phenomenon yet, it’s time to get on board! And if you have children, get them started young, so they don’t hate you (as much) in adulthood when they talk about missing out on everything everybody else was doing.

I wonder if that baby sees the world the same way I do when I achieve Transcendental Floatation.
