Merry Floating by Corliss Buenavida
It’s that time of year again.
Whatever that means to you.
Here in the western world life is dominated by Christmas whether you are a Christian or not. I’m not, but you probably knew that.
While I was walking past a local art display, which is always hanging on a set of corner walls just in front of some of the popular beach bars and restaurants in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua, I noticed a couple of seasonal paintings added to the array of images for sale.
My first thought, of course (and likely yours too), ‘How did Jesus cook his lamb?’
Maybe I was just hungry on my way to dinner but ever since reading a wonderful book by Christopher Moore, ‘Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal’, I have thought about the Jewish preacher differently than most people.
If you are not familiar with the book, I highly recommend it. It is pretty much just like the bible except it covers the missing years between birth and becoming a messiah. Also, Lamb is more of an adventure comedy fiction while the bible is a self help guide.
But enough about reading, let’s talk about cooking!
I asked everybody’s newest artificial friend how Jesus would have cooked his lamb and was informed that it was likely over an open fire with a few simple seasonings and served with unleavened bread (matzah) and wine.
As for that other great seasonal figure whose media campaign ramps up big time after Thanksgiving, I’m not sure how his livelihood got dragged into a Christian celebration, but his diet seems to be primarily milk and cookies! This may account for the big belly.
As happy as we are supposed to be with all the celebratory activities at this time of year, I feel the most striking image I have seen this year is the one on a Christmas card sent my way, made by a very creative amigo in Toronto. I think his art perfectly captures what is truly happening on this globe through a seasonal image gone awry while challenging the ethos of our society and politicians.

If we ever get our shite together then perhaps, we will be able to enjoy a happier image of Santa!
All the best,
Corliss
